The Graduate College’s Equity Master’s Fellowship program helps sustain the academic excellence and inclusiveness of the Illinois graduate community, one that embraces students with diverse experiences and goals and who come from many educational, socio-cultural, geographic, and familial backgrounds.

Please read the following criteria carefully:

If you believe you meet the criteria and want to receive full consideration for this fellowship, you must complete the following by December 15, 2025: (1) submit a complete graduate school application and (2) send an email to shs-grad-admissions@ahs.illinois.edu with “Equity Fellowship” in the subject line, stating that you want to be considered. The deadline for applying for general admission to our master’s program is January 5, 2026.

Application Requirements

All applicants must satisfy the Graduate College minimum degree and GPA requirements for admission.

• Transcripts: Submit transcripts from all schools you attended. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Ensure your scanned copies are clear and readable. If they aren’t, you might need to send official transcripts. For more information on uploading transcripts visit the Graduate College website.
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE): GRE scores are not required for the clinical MA program.
• Letters of Recommendation: You need three letters of recommendation. Ask faculty familiar with your academic background and strengths. Ideally, your references should discuss your interpersonal, collaborative, or clinical skills. Letters from PhD faculty are strongly encouraged.
• Academic Statement: Use the Academic Statement to explain (in 1000 words or less): (1) How your academic and professional background has prepared you for graduate study, (2) How our program aligns with your goals, (3) Your academic interests and reasons for pursuing the MA program.
• Personal Statement: In this section, please share (in 250 words for each point): (1) Describe any experiences and/or challenges that may have shaped your intellectual and personal development, (2) Provide insight into your potential to contribute to a community of inclusion, belonging, and respect in which scholars with diverse perspectives, abilities, and experiences can learn and collaborate productively and positively, (3) Address any concerns you may have in your application (optional), (4) Describe anything you would like to highlight that you have yet to discuss in other areas of the application (optional).
• Resume: Your resume should include your work history, volunteer activities, and any clinical, teaching, or research experience. Provide details like dates, locations, and supervisors. List any honors, awards, grants, publications, or presentations. There is no page limit.
• International students must submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Visit the Graduate College website for minimum TOEFL/IELTS score requirements. You can also find frequently asked questions for international applicants.

We suggest that each potential student contact their potential faculty mentor to discuss if submitting GRE scores is a good idea.

Internal applications

Students who are currently enrolled in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and affiliated with the Department of Speech and Hearing Science should apply to the Ph.D. program through an internal application process.

• The internal application will include transcripts and previous letters of recommendation.
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE): GRE scores are not required, but they can offer useful support in some cases. Applicants who have taken the GRE and feel their scores would benefit their application may choose to submit their scores. If you choose to submit scores, we recommend you scan your official score report as a PDF file and attach it to your application. • The internal application must include a new Statement of Academic Purpose and three letters of recommendation that address the applicant’s preparation and potential for success in the Ph.D. program.
