The Department of Speech and Hearing Science was established in 1973 as part of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It joined the College of Applied Health Sciences in 1991.
The department’s roots go back to 1938 when Dr. Severina Nelson started the Speech Clinic in a small closet. Two years later, with the title of director of the Speech Clinic and a $2,000 grant, Dr. Nelson moved the clinic to a spacious new office in Gregory Hall. Over the years, the clinic grew, eventually moving to a modern facility in Research Park in 2007, with the Audiology Clinic joining it in 2018.
In 2023, SHS celebrated its 50th anniversary. The articles below highlight the key people and research that shaped SHS into the strong program it is today.
