Undergraduate Program
Majoring in speech and hearing science will provide foundational knowledge for understanding human speech, language, swallowing, hearing and balance processes, with a particular focus on the implications of differences and disruptions in the communication systems associated with disorders. Master of Arts
Master of Arts in Speech Speech and Hearing Science (M.A.) — Clinical and Non-clinical
Students in the clinical M.A. program learn about speech-language pathology in medical and educational settings, as well as speech, language and hearing science.
The Master of Arts degree without clinical experience is awarded to candidates who do not wish to pursue careers as speech-language pathologists or certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The non-clinical M.A. program may prepare the student for employment in industry or for a doctoral program in speech, language, hearing science or related areas.
Doctor of Audiology
The Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree is a four-year post-baccalaureate degree that emphasizes the application of basic science and technology and provides advanced professional training.
Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Illinois is a research-oriented degree that prepares students for academic research careers in the field of communication sciences and its disorders.
Student Audiologists Visit the Marching Illini
Students in speech and hearing science are prepared to make a difference in the lives of people with communication impairments, either through direct services or research.
In this video, Au.D. students provide annual training for Marching Illini Band members on how to protect their hearing and offer free hearing screenings for all band members. This is one of many examples of opportunities our students have outside of classes and clinic to help the community.
Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Clinic
Careers in speech and hearing science are focused on making a difference in someone else’s life. Because of this, we are excited to use what we learn in the classroom to serve our community.
