Research: Child Language and Literacy Laboratory
Degree
Ph.D., Speech and Hearing Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2002
Research and Professional Interests
Teaching interests include child language development, childhood communication disabilities, and behavioral genetics. Populations of particular
interest include developmental apraxia of speech, autism spectrum disorders, and late-talking toddlers. Dr. DeThorne's research focuses on why some
children find learning to communicate so much more difficult than other children. In addition, she studies how factors that contribute to differences
in speech-language development overlap with causal factors responsible for differences in learning to read.
